Root Cause Reasons for Depression/Anxiety

Updated: Oct 27, 2022

There are many different reasons you feel anxious and depressed. Root cause treatment looks deeper than your symptoms and instead we become detectives to uncover what is going on underneath.

I have divided up possible reasons for your mental health problems into three categories: physical, mental and spiritual.

"Maybe you are searching among the branches, for what only appears in the roots." - Rumi

Physical reasons that can cause mental health problems

  • Gut Issues (leaky gut, SIBO, food sensitive, dysbiosis in your microbiome)

  • Nutrient deficiencies and depletions

  • Hormone Imbalances

  • Thyroid Issues

  • Systemic Inflammation (brain inflammation)

  • Environmental Toxins

  • Dehydration

  • Poor sleep

  • Stress

  • Neurotransmitter Issues

Mental health issues that can cause symptoms of depression/anxiety

  • Habitual negative habits with thinking or behaviors

  • Autonomic Nervous System dysregulation

  • Limiting beliefs

  • Stress

  • Loneliness - disconnection from others

  • Negative coping skills (numbing out on devices/social media, using food/alcohol, working too much, ect.)

  • Poor boundaries with self and others

  • Lack of self care

  • Relying on others to take care of you and instead stepping into the drivers seat and creating a life that YOU want

  • Being WAY to hard on yourself

  • People pleasing

  • Energy leaks

Spiritual issues that can cause symptoms of anxiety/depression

  • Spiritual misalignment or absence

  • lack of meaning or purpose in your life

  • disconnection from yourself

  • unhealthy relationship to self

  • disconnection from God/Divine/Universe/Earth (whatever you call a higher power)

  • Not giving yourself time for stillness/quiet and instead spending too much time doing

Do some of these issues ring true for you? Often the root cause of our mental health issues is many roots. It takes time, patient and kindness with yourself as you take an honest look at where you are and begin a healing journey.
